Former New Zealand international Benji Marshall has been linked with a move to Hull FC, according to the hulldailymail.

The 30-year-old hasn’t kept it a secret that he hopes to extend his career, with reports that Hull FC will have the play-maker for the 2017 season.

However, Dragons teammate Jason Nightingale has recently turned down rumours that Marshall is going to the Super League, “He is only 30 now and plenty of halves play a lot longer than that so I think Benji has a lot of kilometres left in his legs,” he said.

“I doubt that Benji will go to England and doubt that he is retiring as he’ll be playing on in the NRL and hopefully it’s with our club. There’s always going to be that sort of speculation when someone is off contract but Benji has definitely got a number of years left in him.”

Reports have claimed that the Dragons will talk to Marshall about potential contact extensions after seeing how he performs in the early rounds of the 2016 NRL season. So, Benji will have to impress to continue his NRL career, it seems.

No thanks, we dont need him and certainly not on the wedge and 3 years he'd be wanting to come over for.
We're at full SC with FP salary as the overs on the marquee signing rule so unless we are prepared to lose some experienced players AND a decent earner such as an Ellis we could not afford to sign him.
The way injuries go in a season cutting the squad quality drastically to potentially get BM in isn't a sacrifice I want to see the club make.
The balance is right now...if we can get one of the youngsters into the 6 role and build them long term with Sneyd and continue with building from within with the odd superstar (currently pritchard) surely that's the way to go to keep a balanced and overall strong squad?

You make some very good points and maybe you could be right, but i think someone like Benji makes a good team into a special Team who wins things and at the end of the day that's the point, also I think he pays for himself with added bums on seats

search for Benji Marshall 2015 - The Constant Threat on You Tube and see how much of a coup this would be if we could get him. He is still only 30 and pretty much had a year off in Union a couple of years back. The experience and guidance he could give Dean and HTW, and even Sneyd as he is still young, could be invaluable and really set up the 2 kids to have a great career here

Playing at the back of a strong pack he would be a great signing. The recruitment at the club looks exceptional this year, not only skills but the spirit at the club. I'm sure they must feel Benji fits with the squad.

He is a genius with a rugby ball, can't think of another player like him

If we have a chance to get him it would be an absolute no brainer. Imagine the marketing and PR potential it would give us. Not to mention the lift the team would get as a whole, plus his performance each game. Bums on seats plus the opportunity to develop Sneyd, Tuimavave, HTW and Dean, it would be the best signing we could hope for in 2017.

I hope we are able to sign a marque player next season and Benji would be just the ticket.

Looking at the wider picture, the Super League needs this extension of the salary to work. We have fallen behind other competitions and need to catch up.

Take today for instance. Danny Captiani has signed for Wasps for next season on £300k pa, yet he's barely an England RU fringe player these days.

Super League is trumped by the NRL, then the RFU and then French Rugby Union. We need to find a way to attract the better players during or close to their prime, otherwise they'll always remain or move to the more lucrative options above.
