He has to prove his fitness first and foremost and that he's capable of performing to the level his salary is buying before we go anywhere near extending a deal. And yes offering a reduced contract if that is deemed to be appropriate, that's not an insult, that's business.
He's only played 54 times out of 95 league and cup matches over the last 3 seasons with 2 major injuries (& was out for 3 months in 2012 at Wests due to a broken foot). That's a heck of a lot of salary cap sitting on the sidelines for a decent chunk of the period he's been with us. the chances of injury increase with age, there's no telling how this season never mind next will go.

I'd love to keep him, he is nothing but a 100% man that does have a major influence on the field but we have to be smart and weigh up the pros and cons and offer a contract as appropriate.
We have to look at all avenues and if that means looking for another player to replace him then so be it, being sentimental wins you nothing and we can't know if this season could turn out to a nightmare.
So IF it turns out we don't resign him for whatever reason, who would we be looking at to replace him, indeed would it be another prop/second row?

May as well get him a season pass instead of new contract the amount of time he spends on the side line watching! How many of the 54 games did he limp off or didn't finish too?!
We would be mad to give him an extension then him blow up on his return leaving us paying out for a sidelined contracted player ,we have been burned before.

Think you missed the bit in the acticle where he said he would be playing this season for a new contract, not that he was talking about one.

I hope he makes a great recovery and has an injury free season, imagine him in the pack as well with both him and Pritchard doing the hits, not to mention Scott Tylor as well. OUCH.

He's probably on around £170k a year or nearly 10% of our salary cap and I just think it's too much of a risk to tie up that much in a player who has missed a fair bit of each of the last 3 seasons through injury. if he proves durable this year I'd offer him decent but reduced terms

How about £160,099 a season?

I didn't, you said he was worth MORE than he is currently being paid if he was injury free and that you would not pay him a penny less no matter what as it'd be an insult.
Firstly Ellis has rarely being injury free so your first two words aren't really applicable over the last three seasons and the odds are not in his favour this year or next.
Secondly we have no guarantee that his injury record will improve yet you are happy to give him a new contract AND pay him full whack. That's a massive gamble and frankly we would be paying over the odds for an injury prone player no matter how good he is when fit.

on what basis, can you not read/understand what Bal wrote or what my response said in reply?
From your petty reply that's a gimme but for you I'll make it simple. Wait and see how he goes and adjust a new contract as appropriate, if he's too big a risk and breaks down we don't gamble with that amount of salary cap. :thumb:

If Ellis is on the rumoured £170,000 then I do think he is worth more, yes. It governed by the salary cap of course, which if it didn't exist I'm sure he would be earning a lot more. However I don't think we should increase his terms, just not reduce them providing his injury record this season is either injury free or close too. Of course, if he spends the entire season out injured, or even the majority of it, I think he would be the first to say enough is enough. This is likely an all or nothing decision from both parties imo.
