He's certainly done well enough in that role to persuade a number of big clubs to employ him in it, which suggests some people at least consider it to be something he's good at. Unless the likes of Tony Smith and Brian McDermott wouldn't know a good assistant coach if they saw one?
Not quite sure where his abilities as a head coach come into the equation, given that's not the job he's been appointed to?
