Watched the first 2 hunger games films over the weekend after being pestered to watch them by various people and although in many ways they're just a sanitised less creepy version of Battle Royale I enjoyed them both greatly. Generally well acted, well paced and well shot. I shall be going to the cinema to see the 3rd film if it's still showing.
8.5/10

The Island - I felt my heart sink when the opening credits said, 'Directed by Michael Bay' - that usually means a load of explosions and super duper special effects, with no actual characters whom you like or care about. I was pleasantly surprised for 90% of the movie however - it's a cracking sci-fi story, which feels like it could be loosely based on several novels, not least the Wool Trilogy by Hugh Howey. All the leads are terrific (especially Scarlett Johanson who is extremely easy to look at,) the story is intelligent and the action punctuates it very well. Loses it way a bit in the final act, in pursuit of a neat and tidy wrap-up, but an enjoyable romp nonetheless.

Fury.
Outstanding. Introduces a new level of brutality and sheer violence to the Hollywood war blockbuster, together with superb performances from all concerned. It's not all about violence, but also a number scenes that tug at your emotions and have you nervously wondering what's going to happen next. A stark and bleak depiction of the campaign in Germany on the ground - admittedly not the most realistic war film, but great at what it does.
Small criticisms, the climactic scene dips too far into the unbelievable, some of the military bloopers are unmissable, and some of it is a little OTT even for a grim and gritty war film, but for me none of that detracts from the film and its message at all.

Re Fury - "nervously wondering what's going to happen next". The scene in the house with the two german girls was very uncomfortable. A great scene and I would give the film a 9/10.
Dallas Buyers Club - 10/10! Really really enjoyed this! Great performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto in the main roles, and Jennifer Garner wasn't quite as wooden as she normally is - so definitely recommended, and just come to Netflix if you have it!
