I remember years ago attending a conference where a guy put up a chart showing a beautiful correlation between movements in the stock market and an unknown variable, which he revealed to be phases of the moon.
He'd spent ages trawling all kinds of data to prove the fact that if you look hard enough, eventually you'll find fantastically statistically accurate but absolutely meaningless correlations between completely unrelated variables.
