Reading comments on the thread 7 out of 8, isn't it about time we looked at a return of A team football?

I've been sceptical about the duel registration system.

I don't think it gives our players a stern enough test.

I don’t think that the championship side gains anything out of it either.

I'd like to see regular A team fixtures parallel with the current SL.

Some of those fixtures back in the 70s and 80s were quite tasty and some got quite a good attendance.

I think it would be good to see the north stand open up on an eve, perhaps a Thursday with all the refreshments and stalls open.
Perhaps a £5 admission with accompanied children free.

I used to love running round the fletcher end, up and down the steps as a child in the 70s if I got fed up with the rugby.
As the stands were never packed, it became a play ground for my sister and I.
Happy times. Kids would love it.

Cost, simple we would be one of about 6 clubs able to afford to run a second team.

I disagree.
It can be made commercially viable.

Things can be different fmc.
Many teams have new stadia and better facilities.
Back in the day, the 1st att was 3-4500 for most clubs and yet still ran an A team.
All teams have the squad size for running a reserve outfit and players wages is already budgeted into the salary cap.
So its all down to the success of commercial enterprise as regarding how profitable it can be?

You can to a point make it commercially viable but not as Warrington A or Wigan A.

You create county teams, the clubs pay a general membership fee that is cheaper than running a team and that money goes to a central fund. The money is then divided out equally among the counties and you create a county tournament.
Age limit of 23 with a 3 players overage exemption (designed for returning players from injury).

The players playing for Wire don't all have to play for a Cheshire team so in essence you could have contracted Wire players dotted around in different county clubs based on certain eligibility.
Birth/Residence/Club Side.
Overseas players returning from injury only play based on club side.
Some players would be eligible for 3 teams some 2 and others only 1.
You don't lock yourself into one team either but only one team per season.

It's easy doable, you have a game semi centralised, county competition and a place to keep hold of the lads just that little bit longer. There are enough counties to form a league.

Lancs
Cumbria
Merseyside
Gtr Manchester
Cheshire
Humberside
North Yorkshire
South Yorkshire
London and South East
Wales
France
Midlands and South West.

It's been fun.

That league looks something like what Maurice Lyndsey tried to envisage but with Wigan still independently in it!

To be fair Wigan and Leeds have such good academies they could.

Can't agree with this sorry and not just the fact that you have left out West Yorkshire.

It seems barmy to me to add another separate layer of competition/admin when the structure should be/is in place already based on the club system. What's wrong with the system from how it is run/not run/funded? Additionally, why artificially create this new enterprise when at times 'we' can't seem to run what we have correctly?

As part of the licencing agreement, financing an 'A' team should be part of the deal not a voting matter whereby some clubs could abrogate their responsibilities to the game as a whole.
