Se7en - not dated in any way and still amongst the best serial killer yarns ever committed to celluloid; brilliant, gripping and decidedly uncomfortable stuff from David Fincher, with great performances from Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as the central odd couple.

Nebraska 9.5/10 worthy of all the praise despite being in B+W, scenery would have been enhanced with colour, but colour not really in keeping with the mood of the film, loved the ending.

Hitchcock 6/10 nothing startling but worth a watch . The wolf of wall street 8/10 a great film , great cast , great comedy . Only down side it goes on a bit too long

The Wolverine - a study in insomnia and PTSD with some poor chop-socky thrown in for good measure; one of the best Marvel characters, dulled down to the point of being almost unwatchable - if I hadn't paid for it on Sky Box Office, I would've switched it off.

Her - 9.5/10
Wow, I was not expecting that. I remember seeing the trailer for this film a few months ago, and I instantly dismissed it as being something ridiculous when I heard that the basic premise was a lonely man falling in love with an operating system. I'm so glad that I decided to watch it anyway, because that synopsis doesn't do the film justice at all.
The script, the acting, the direction, the cinematography, the music, everything about this film just feels so bang on the money. It's just shot so well and feels so stylish. The premise is correct in that the film really does centre around a guy falling in love with an o/s, but it's so much more than that. It's a film about love, and loss and acceptance and progression, all mixed in with future technology that is perfectly subtle enough to feel like most of it could quite easily become reality someday. The overall style of the film felt very much like that of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The subject matter won't be for everyone - it's still a romance film at heart - but I will still be recommending this film to everyone that I know, because it's absolutely worth your time.
This year is really hard to call the oscar winners. After I saw 12 Years a Slave I was convinced that would be the front runner but now I'm not so sure. I'm not sure that Her will take home best picture because it doesn't seem to have generated as much buzz as some other nominees, but it certainly has a great shot at original screenplay, and maybe even the award for best music.
