I'm not convinced that Lost was written before it was filmed, so I don't think even they knew the outcome of most of the weird story lines when they started them; I understand that the Returned is based on a pre-existing book/film, so no danger of that.
I was thoroughly satisfied with the ending - enough questions answered with plenty left unanswered; can't wait for series 2, although it looks like a long one - next year I gather.
