There is a delightful little spot called The Lobster Pot in the town, they serve monosodium glutomate in various guises.
To be serious, there are lots of decent places to eat on and around Albert Dock and just up the road around the Liverpool One area. They are not cheap, so if it's on expenses you might fancy a try. We have tried the Brasco Lounge (had Tapas) and an Indian called EastZEast (Punjabi cooking) which were nice, but the Brasco did have a few families (hence kids) in at the time.

Not sure where the convention centre is, but in the centre of town (opposite the bombed out church) is "Zorbas". It's an old fashioned Greek restaurant that does not look that exciting but I really like it. The food is pretty good and good value. Greek food is one of those cuisines I do not like to eat regularly (maybe twice a year) but always love it when I do. I'll see if they have a website and add it.
Reviews generally very favourable. Less favourable ones too - but if you accept what I said about being old fashioned and are not a snob, I think it's good (and I have eaten out an awful lot more times than the average tripadvisor reviewer and in many expensive places).
PS Just had a look through the top few pages of Tripadvisor reviews - all the bad ones are from people who have only posted a few reviews and presumably only consider something decent if its treb=ndy and glitzy. The good reviews are generally from people who have posted lots of reviews and therefore, in my opinion, are likely to take a more balanced view rather than being taken in by the latest thing.

60 Hope Street (try bistro downstairs) London Carriage Works Fraiche (10 mins in a taxi over the river) quite pricey but very good owner cooked food and service Delifonseca Puschka (one of my fave Liverpool restos) You may also like the very informal Lunya. They don't do lobscouse but Catalan scouse instead

Don't know the others, but would definitely recommend Delifonseca on Stanley St
