What's the best thing to do if I want to start learning the piano - buy myself a book and teach myself, or start off with a teacher and get the basics down first?
well you will need your own fully weighted piano in my opinion, the only way to get a sound out that will sound like what you are listening to.
Then it's up to you, take a few starter lessons then go it alone, but whatever you try, stick at it and try and learn some songs you like, even if it 's just a few intros. Most songs are just Verse section Chorus section, to learn them all the way through is to usually just learn 20 seconds of each.

If you want to learn piano/keys.. imho it is best to explore it yourself. I don't think learning from a book helps one bit, will probably hold you back in the long run. Best to experiment and see what it can do, esp with keys/piano as it is such a visual instrument. It kind of depends what u want to get out of it. Personally I went from synths to piano without much trouble so I am not sure a piano weighted keyboard is that essential when you start out, especially with the expense. Enjoy, let me know how u get on!
