This case links so much that's wrong with modern Britain:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -raid.html

including:

1. Privatisation of "care"
2. Tory philosophy (Surrey CC)
3. How useless local authorities are
4. Illegal immigration
5. How unethical so many people are

The whole thing is shameful. How has this country been allowed to come to this. I also see that Loony Feudalface Cameron is trying to cut down on judicial reviews - which happens to just about the only mechanism left to hold local and national government to account. Why do we all sit by and let these things happen? Our freedoms and democracy are being eroded at an enormous rate.

Ah yes, but sub-contracting care services to this private company was probably a darn site cheaper to the local authority than going to all the trouble of employing an in-house team, OBVIOUSLY a private company would do the job quicker, more efficiently, and cheaper than a local authority team AND within the new budgets.

Obviously.

We lack 'social pride' and shame. Our moral compass has gone to rat poop, because successive generations from all spectrums of society have been brought up to think that there is no 'right' or 'wrong', only differences in opinion or perspective. A 'me first' culture has developed, and bo11ocks to everyone else.

By way of example, for some, multiple offspring with multiple partners during teenage years is the norm. Unable to support their children, 'welfarism' is then considered a completely legitimate lifestyle choice.

At the other end of the scale, and again for some, aggressive tax avoidance is perceived as totally acceptable.

The social contract is broken. Everyone knows their rights, far fewer know their responsibilities.

And this is before we get started at the state of our towns and cities on a Friday and Saturday night...

so, society is as it always has been then, the have's have because they make sure they have, the have nots blame the have's because they have not, without taking responsibility to better/improve their lot, and people get drunk and fight/court/mate on their days off?

2013/1813 no different in behaviour, just different in outfits.

Are you aware that a lot of the time you come across as a character from a Dickens novel? And not in a good way. :)

You'd have been well at home in Victorian times.

Never looked at any Hogarth?

"You are working for Satan." Kirkstaller

"Dare to know!" Immanuel Kant

"Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive" Elbert Hubbard

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Wilde

No, that is far too simplistic.

Over the years we as a society gradually moved away from the appalling way the poor were treated from around the time of Dickens to a state in the later half of the 20th century where there truly was a social contract.

The gap between the "haves" and the rest was then nothing like as great as it has become in a few short years recently. People had rights and people didn't expect million pound golden goodbye's when they screwed up a companies prospects. The current government would take the reduction in workers rights even further than Thatcher and with remuneration committee's senior corporate life is just one big trough.

In short we are regressing not progressing and it is as if we are returning to a time of the landed gentry ruling over us meek citizens. This time the "haves" are not the Lords and Earl's but the technocrats, bankers and so on.

Also these days the concept of philanthropy seems dead. Our history peppered with the acts of enlightened people who were very well off who worked out it might be a good thing to look after their workers and, shock horror, some even did it not because they wanted to get more hours out of them but simply because it was the right thing to do.

This from above sums it up very well:

"The social contract is broken. Everyone knows their rights, far fewer know their responsibilities."

I am convinced that wasn't the case not that long ago.
