Brighton Council is considering stopping using the titles Mr and Mrs since they "can cause offense to transgender people".
A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove council said: "Trans people still face significant discrimination and exclusion in many areas of life in this country. Brighton and Hove City Council is proud to be involved in a pioneering piece of work to address this."
The plan proposes that all official documents used by the local authority will no longer use the 'useless' titles.
I only know one such person whose opinion on the proposal was speechless and one resigned shake of the head.
But in these straitened times - is this the sort of burning issue that we want our local representatives to devote their time to discussing? If I lived in Brighton I might even write a stiff letter. Dear Cnuts seems about right, to enter into the spirit...

What a load of bollox (no pun intended), haven't they got anything better to do.
What the problem with addressing Mr Chris Smith as Ms or Miss Christine Smith post op.
I remember some idiot on the radio chastising a women for describing herself as a 'wife', saying I prefer partner, to which the women replied 'you call yourself what you want, I am a wife'
'when my life is over, the thing which will have given me greatest pride is that I was first to plunge into the sea, swimming freely underwater without any connection to the terrestrial world'

So, even though in transition, they shouldn't be referred to as Miss, Ms or Mrs if they haven't had the op?
It's pretty much a non-story, I can't see what the fuss is all about, it's hardly detracting councillors from their "normal" business

A woman from the council went on 5Live today to explain it. It's not a ban on Mr & Mrs, and it's only at the consultation stage. It's an option for people to opt out of being called Mr & Mrs (or whatever is applicable) by the Council and to have whatever they want or to just have their names on without a title.

What's the fuss?
People are people and should be allowed to call themselves what they wish.
If you're not transgender I would imagine it's virtually impossible to understand the turmoil one would find oneself in.
This probably took about five minutes of council time to decide and if it leads to less prejudice then Brighton should be applauded for once again being at the vanguard of the advancement of British society.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

What's the odds on it making headline news in the Wail or DianaExpress?

When a person fills in a new Brighton official form and their name is Chris Smith or Sam Smith and that's how they we're named.
How does one tell what sex they are anyway? Surely they'd have to remove the "Gender" M or F tick box so as not to cause "offence" or "discomfort" to anyone also?
We are all the same. You are not more special. Whoever or whatever you are.
