Had she started out now, she would therefore very likely have entered stuff like the X-Factor.

I'm sure the talent contest route was taken by innumerable others, but if it's good enough for Ella Fitzgerald, it's good enough for me.

All routes to selling records and making a household name for yourself are legitimate as are all forms of music, if they sell then someone likes them, judging an act on what route they came to your attention via is snobbery of the highest order.
