People die, new people grow up and become voters. e.g. many of those who could remember the sleeze of the Major/Thatcher years had probably died by the 2010 election and many new voters registered. It's a bit like Rugby League crowds. A club's crowd is not the same people all the time - people stop coming for whatever reason and replacements are required for them.

I think the "turnover" is far lower than you imagine. Someone who voted against the Tories in 1997 can be as young as 33 now. Given increasing longevity and an ageing population I reckon the percentage of the voting public around now who were also around then will be very high.

The problem isn't so much old voters dropping off their perches as the short memory that the average voter seems to have.

Anyone who voted Tory in 1997 and is 33 now deserves the mother and father of all slappings.

I know. That was the original point I was making.

It must've still taken an incredible amount of either supidity, arrogance or both to even float the proposal, based purely on what some gamekeepers "thought" might be happening.

There are also those voters who feel they have become disnefranchised or simply apathetic to the whole process.

Owen Jones wrote an interesting article in this week's Indy debunking the Blair myth. He proposes that had John Smith not popped his clogs, Labour would still had a landslide victory in 1997, simply because we'd all had enough of the tories. He also proposes that Labour's collapse has little to do with a change in the middle class vote and more to do withignoring grass roots. One thing's for sure, we'd be in a better position now if John Smith had been in power, rather than Blair

The thought of him always reminds of a certain lager advert 'It refreshes the elections others cannot reach' the door to number 10 opens and there he is with a pint in hand and a big smile on his face.

Gideon's new SatNav - "George-George" only has two instructions:

"Keep right"

"Perform a u-turn when possible"
