Onan was a character in popular novel 'The Bible' (authors unknown) and was killed by God for 'spilling his seed on the ground'. He is, therefore, largely thought to be literatures first character to 'relax in a gentleman's way' and lends his name to the practise of onanism, generally a lone pursuit of self-pollution.
