It was a huge issue to the guy and he did not like the idea one little bit. I'd imagine there's a lot like him around the country. They may be a minority but it's a very big issue to them.

It's always perplexed me as to why people regard it as a big issue. I'd have said that crime, the economy and education were "bigger issues", not the fact that two people who have no connection to me want to have some form of equality in their lives.

If only people got themselves into such a lather about important stuff.

Indeed. Some of the comments on the Telegraph website in recent weeks have been hysterical – in more ways than one. There seem to be people out there who really believe that the issue of gay marriage will create something close to revolution.

"You are working for Satan." Kirkstaller

"Dare to know!" Immanuel Kant

"Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive" Elbert Hubbard

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Wilde

The Voluptuous Manifesto – thoughts on all sorts of stuff.

I also wonder if there's an element of "Methinks they doth protest too much" in some of the right wing ravings.

Who was that Republican bloke railing against all things gay that got caught whacking a guy off in an airport lavatory again?

I hope he's got a new career lined up.

Presumably that was OK as they didn't intend to get married.
