In the early 70s I was managing a bar in Hull that was part of a major city-centre hotel. The hotel used to host all the acts booked to play at Bailey's. One week the cast of The Comedians were staying and I've never had a more laughter-filled week than that.

Colin Crompton, Ken Goodwin, George Roper, Steve Faye, Duggie Brown and Frank Carson kept me in stitches all week. Especially Frank Carson. He was like an uncle to Duggie Brown, who used to follow him round like a puppy and he never stopped cracking jokes from the moment he booked in until the time he checked out. Never heard the same joke or phrase (apart from "It's the way I tell 'em"), more than once. They'd come back to the hotel after their act and then spend the next three hours or so playing poker and unwinding. They were incredibly lousy poker players, I probably made about 4 x times my weekly wage from them that week.

RIP Frank, a truly unique one-off and always a thorough gentleman.

Sadly, comedians of his type are dying off now, which is a shame.

Frank Carson and the comedians Cod'ead mentions made a living off basically doing the same act (albeit in a different order, with a smattering of topicality at the beginning of each gig) for 50 years - and there's nothing wrong with that. They all had one vital element though - they were FUNNY.

One of my favourite Frank Carson jokes, which appeals to my warped sense of humour...

"What's green, got six legs and if it fell out of a tree, would kill you? A snooker table!"

"I've not come 'alfway round t'world fot watch us lose. And I've come halfway round t'world, an' av watched um lose"

Agree with all of that - especially that gag

I wasn't the biggest fan of Franck Carson, but it really does have the feeling of being the end of an era.
