Fact is, most mobile operators are tying people into 18-24 month contracts. Whatever you get your phone will cease to be the latest model before your contract expires. My HTC Desire was old hat almost immediately, but it still does a bloody good job and is a great phone.
That said, anyone so desperate to get the latest iPhone needs to get out more.
I don't know why anti Apple people get so uppity about people wanting a new Apple product. If you don't like it, fine, but the reaction of some people is laughable.

I think it's unlikely to be released until next summer, maybe even 12 months away, who knows.

I can see it being rushed out, Apple are heavily investing into Contactless payment (NFC) which they intend to start adding into their devices, the 2012 Olympic village is being kitted out with Contactless payment (NFC), they won't want to miss it and I'm not sure it's something they can just add into their current phones by way of an update, hence the 5.

The day anti-Apple people stop getting uppity about people wanting a new Apple product will be the same day people who do have an iPhone stop asking "why didn't you get an iPhone" when you get a new phone or when you buy a Galaxy S they say "it's just a complete copy of the iPhone" which is pretty much what happened to me when I got mine!
My contract is due an upgrade next month and I'm thinking of upgrading to the Galaxy S2. Any word on when the S3 might be released??

Largely on the button. I'd happily get an iphone if they refreshed how the OS looks etc once in a while and offered contracts that were competitive/comparative to other smart/super-phones. I understand the desirability of the iphone (and other apple products) in terms of its ease of use and the way they 'just work' but 90% of other such high end devices are more than capable of matching if not improving on this these days. I think what makes most of the so-called 'anti-apple' people speak out is that they can see beyond the clever marketing tactics employed by apple and the blind faith many iphone owners have in the product. And then there's the bandwagonning linked to what Adam says, the iphone has grown into something beyond a simple (or in this case rather complex) handheld telephone and is as much a badge of honour for fashionistas, including that rather vocal lot, the celebrities.
Anyway, back to the matter of handsets... Adam the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a superb piece of kit, i was torn between it and the HTC Sensation that I ended up choosing because of the great job HTC have done in skinning Android/Gingerbread with their Sense UI. There is little between the two, but inevitably they are both being surpassed... There are two new versions/additions to HTC's Sensation line-up and this bad-boy The Samsung/Google Nexus which is for all intents and purposes your Galaxy S3 (until Samsung actually release one called that) that is coming in November I believe, and with Google's soon to be latest OS codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich no less! Here is a fantastic article on that OS and how it compares favourably to apples latest offering... Android Ice Cream Sandwich vs iOS5.

I was showing a work mate the xbox live function and how it was all linked, his 1st question was "Can i get that on my phone?" i replied "What do you have?" "A iPhone" "No, was my replied" "But its a iPhone!!!"
It seems that iOS users think that there is nothing outside of there system..
And they are the ones who get "Uppity" when others dont fall into the iPhone sales pitch.

I have a HTC myself and don't like it. I think the Android market is quite poor, it's flooded with poor and pointless apps, the phone itself isn't much good either.
I suppose no one other than iphone users think the same way about their phone do they? There are plenty of HTC users out there who think their phones are better than everyone elses.

Cheers for the info - that Nexus does look very nice. Shame that the camera is only 5MP, but I don't take a huge amount of photos on my phone anyway. I'll probably see how much you have to spend per month on an 18-month contract to get the handset for free. I may just go for the Galaxy S2 and reduce my monthly contract price in the process as I got the Galaxy S on release whereas this has been out for a good few months.
I noticed there's a Galaxy S2 HD that's been announced which is apparently faster than the Galaxy Nexus, although it only seems to be being released in South Korea at the moment.
