Looks like there will be a big impact on local radio:

http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... _1_3848089

A BBC insider posts on the Leeds RU site and has posted on how it will impact on them (a club which it has to be said is already grossly over-covered by Radio Leeds as even their own fans admit in the comments). The impact on RL will be similar in terms of local sports teams not being allowed to go outside their local area:

Quote:As you may have heard, The BBC has announced its proposed cuts to its services and BBC local Radio and local sports coverage are planned to be hit the hardest.

Below is a brief outline of those proposals and, if implemented, how they will affect Leeds Carnegie in the future .

Away matches: BBC Radio Leeds reporters would not be allowed to leave West Yorkshire and so commentary of Leeds Carnegie away matches would be provided by the ‘opposition’ BBC stations. So Bath v Leeds would be covered only by BBC Bristol. However if a local station does not cover the home team at all, then there would be no commentary at all.

Potential problems with this…
1)These commentators would not know anything about Leeds and would provide bias commentary toward the opposition and against Leeds.

2) They will only commentate on the game and nothing else. So, for example: if Leeds play at Nottingham and Joe Ford breaks his leg, or Diccon Edwards resigns, etc. then there would be no reporters at the game to get the news to the fans and conduct the necessary interviews, etc.

3)In the Championship only Leeds, Bristol & Cornish Pirates are covered by their local BBC Radio station. So that means there would be no commentary at all for games at clubs that are not covered by local radio. That means Leeds fans will lose - 9 games of the regular season; potentially 3 play-off pool games & the away legs of the Semi & Final. So if Leeds need to win on final day of the regular season at London Welsh to get into the play-offs - there will be no commentary at all of that decisive game.

Removal of the 774AM frequency: This is the main frequency of Leeds Carnegie commentary. BBC Radio Leeds has been fortunate in the past to be in a position to broadcast different outputs on different frequencies at the same time. So normally on a Sunday Rugby League will be on FM from 3pm, and Carnegie will be on 774AM. If AM is cut it means there will be just the FM frequency to broadcast on. If Leeds Carnegie go head to head with football or rugby league coverage, then there will only be one winner and Leeds will not be covered.

Shared programming: The proposal states to have more shared programming on weeknights and weekends with Radio Leeds taking output that is also on every other local BBC station across the country. This means that the bosses will have to decide, say on a Sunday between 3-5pm, if they prefer Leeds Carnegie commentary or a shared generic music show. Again, there are no guarantees Leeds Carnegie would win this battle.

These proposals will obviously affect all sport output at BBC Radio Leeds, including football, Yorkshire cricket and rugby league at all levels.

These proposals will be implemented if no objections are made. However the BBC Trust is asking for listeners opinions on this issue. You can get more information on these cuts and have your say here: [www.bbc.co.uk]

I'm also wondering what the impact's going to be for the CC contract, as the BBC's probably going to be the only bidder (Sky won't be interested as the Final's one of the 'protected' events).

Freedom for supporters of the government, only for members of one party - however numerous they may be - is no freedom at all. freedom is always and exclusively for one who thinks differently.

ITV or Channel 5 might get in on the bidding?

I wonder about the CC. The BBC might be slashing budgets left right and centre but they are, as an organisation, absolutely paranoid about their real or perceived southern bias. In their eyes the Challenge Cup might be an easy win enabling a certain degree of outreach to northern viewers. That's not to say they will pay over the odds or even close to the odds for it but I suspect they would be unlikely to drop it altogether.

The local radio cuts on the other hand affect all stations nationwide and the impacts are across all sports so there is no bias as such to RL other than that our inherent regionalisation as a sport perhaps makes it more dangerous as there are limited alternative outlets (stations like Yorkshire Radio may benefit significantly from this).

Maybe we can turn it to our advantage. If the BBC are cutting the amount they spend on sports rights and coverage, then RL is perfectly placed to to get more .

Instead of selling 2 matches per round, sell 4 matches over 2 weeks for round 4, 4 matches over 8 weeks in round 5, 4 matches over 2 weeks for round 6, which would mean in stead of 6 matches being screened we would have 12 screened which is good for the sport and a relatively cheap way of the BBC meeting their sporting remit as well as remove the huge gaps and lack of consistency which stops the CC getting a roll on and for a 4 month period there would be live FTA RL on at least every fortnight.

We dont need to ask for a massive increase in payment for the increase in games within the rights package, but it would give us lots more exposure, regular exposure, increase in sponsorship opportunities and an increase in visibility for the CC and the game as a whole.

Won't be long until all you hear on the radio, read in the papers and see on tv is soccer!

I'm sick of the overexposure it gets, FFS SKY have 4 sports channels and a dedicated sports news channel and you still can't get anything but soccer, slight exaggeration but it's football, football and mor efffing football.

given radio leeds poor coverage at present I fear for what it will be like after the cuts

The BBC should spend more on minority sports, or just, in short, less on football which has a major commercial value. I'm sure the cost of 'Match of the Day' in rights and paying Alan Shearer to say sod all could be much better used covering a range of sports like they used to do.

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

RL has always done very well out of Radio Manchester, disproportionately so IMHO, so it would be a shame if there was to be a cut on what is usually a 4 hour show on Friday's and Sunday's, plus a couple of hours on a Thursday and even cutting short the football stuff if there's a Saturday evening game.
