One indirect comparison (from another sport) you could equate Wigan's tactics to (under Fadge), would be cricket's 'infamous' Bodyline series, where the ball was deliberately pitched short in order to inflict harm to the batsman. Hostile/intimidatory bowling had obviously taken place before, but these events were a watershed in the game.

I hate to think that chicken-winging and thirdmaninthetackle, will become commonplace in our game, over here. They've been imported by two Australian coaches who see nothing wrong in them....I for one, do.
Every club has a history of 'dirty' players, and that's what they were...dirty, but you knew what you got with them. This is very much 'cloak and dagger'

Yes, Fadge has been successful. Good luck to him. If he can sleep at nights, knowing his team use 5h1thouse tactics, then so be it. When he goes, I'll breathe a sigh of relief for our game, as I think there's no need for such tactics, that he and Brown(sorry Hudds fans, but he's just as bad) brought over to our shores. Noble, a very honourable man, who's sides were ALWAYS extremely physical, never stooped so low, as to use such methods when he was in charge at Wigan.

As other posters have said....it's win at all costs.

Melbourne's pots have been discredited, down under, for clear rule breaking
Wigan's wont be, but they'll have a tinge of 'ill gotten gains' about them

Neither glass half full or empty. Just a realist.

The won the inaugural Aussie premiership. They have won more premierships than any other club.

They are one of only two foundation clubs in the NRL to have survived in their original form.

When they were excluded from the NRL a decade ago there was a massive public campaign for their reinstatement, with tens of thousands of protesters marching through Sydney.

They are a big club and for many people in Oz represent the spirit of RL and its roots in working class areas of Sydney.

But hey, what do I know compared with a Warrington fan....

some great premierships they've won havent they....??

those early classics leagues eh ??? played only in the city of Sydney amongst eight or nine clubs with some games being played 9 a side....

in fact that counts for 11 of their 20 premierships

5 more won in 10 to 12 team leagues in the 1950's with two more titles in the 60's and the last two in 1970 and 1971....

they havent won anything in the modern era...

in fact since 1988 when the NSWRL became the league we all know now, souths have won More wooden spoons than any other team and have been kicked out the league for being poop....

he'll be right at home maguire...

Souths are a big name, the biggest in rugby league. That doesn't automatically make Maguire one. Like saying Andre Villas Boas was a big name before going Chelsea, which he wasn't. If he is successful at Souths(which I think he will be) he then will go onto being a big name in Aus. It's like saying Wane is a big name over here, when the only thing big about him is his gut.

Have a look at this Aussie article when Maguire was given the Souths' job:

"He may not be widely known ....." doesn't really sound like a description of a "big name" in the NRL to me but I guess we'll go with the opinion of a Pie-Eater on the internet rather than an Australian journalist paid to comment on the NRL.

You never did confirm whether you consider Shaun Mcrae a "big name" in the NRL?

D'oh. Another one that doesn't understand the status of Souths in Oz.

Actually i'll admit that, why would i know all about South's status in the NRL? More's the point why would i care?

Clearly you've done your research to try and support your claim about your outgoing coach.

My question is, why do you care where he is going? Why do you care about the status of the club he is going to ?

He arrived, was very successful in turning a mid table team into the champions and now he is leaving. I'd be more concerned about why he is leaving the 'Biggest Club in RL', than the history of the 'Crap at the moment' team he is going to.

You never did confirm whether you consider Shaun Mcrae a "big name" in the NRL?

So. His appointment was a big story in RL back in April. He may not have been widely known at that time outside RL circles - in which he has been highly rated for some time (otherwise it's doubtful whether he could have gone straight from Wigan to a big NRL club even after the success he had last year, they just don't rate SL, and who can blame them).

But to say that he isn't a big name now is just ridiculous. The article you have cited (rather unhelpfully for a lot of the other Wire fans on this thread, I doubt they'll thank you for it  ) describes Souths as "one of the world's most famous rugby league clubs".

There has been a lot of press interest around his signing (because of the status of Souths, Madge's track record and the esteem he is held in by people like Bellamy as quoted in the article) because its one of the big NRL clubs, with perhaps the highest profile due to its history, fan base and ownership.

To say that their new coach isn't a big name is ridiculous. The obvious analogy would be Villas-Boas (not quite the same because he hasn't been a figure known in English football, whereas Madge was assistant coach at a leading NRL side). Would you say that he wasn't a big name in English football the moment his appointment was announced? Bizarre.

Not sure where you guys are going with this anti-Madge campaign. You've just won the LLS after a great league campaign and you are very well poised going into the play-offs. Why you're all taking time out to bash Madge in such ridiculous terms (Bodyline? Don Revie? "Despised" His achievements tainted etc etc) is beyond me. It is funny though!

Because you're a RL fan?

Sadly many fans in this country are just fans of their own club rather than being RL fans who support a particular club.

Wigan fans have their faults - pessimism, arrogance and a hint of paranoia (though everybody does hate us  ) but one thing most of us can't be accused of is not thinking about the wider game. (There are many other good things about Wigan fans but I won't upset you by listing them). The best example of this would be that when the SC was brought in most Wigan fans (myself included) at the time were supportive because we thought (wrongly) that it would really benefit the game as a whole, even though it was likely not to help Wigan in the short/medium term.

The other reason you should care is that if you are expressing a view on someone else's opinions it is best to have some knowledge of the subject.
