Correct Dave (one of several people I didn't know prior to this)

The atmosphere at Wigan has improved 10 fold over the last two years. The flags are welcomed by most and I'm actually asked "where are the flags" if they aren't at an away game. At games such as Catalans and Harlequins people ask for their pictures to be taken with them a few of which are on the gallery section of the website.

We have sold over 300 badges, 100 scarves (with around 50 more on pre-order), raised over £1000 through a bucket collection and sold out a fund raising event in less than 36 hours and raised a further £1000 on the night. If that isn't fans getting behind the idea then I'm not sure what is.

If you think our flags are dull then create better and brighter ones (I'd be interested to see what colours you would use other than red and white though). Sing different songs if ours are monotonous and annoying.

I understand people's apprehension, but at the end of the day, the Stobart's like a morgue at times.
We do have a voice - walking to the HJ on Saturday it was our songs I could hear, not Wigan's.
Our shiney new stadium derserves a passionate crowd to fill it with song and if people want to put a little extra effort into that, then good on them. If the word Ultra hadn't been mentioned, would the negetive reactions have come?

Saint at Wire seems to have a lot of anger and hatred welled up inside him. I agree with everything Dave said, do you want to just stand and lightly applaud your side for 80 minutes, if so then go and watch a rugby union game. The Brigantes have made it more fun to be at a game, no swearing, no fighting, just a bunch of lads trying to have some fun, with most of the fans joining in.

People who think Wigan Ultras are all about creating a better atmosphere should look a bit deeper. They have used smoke bombs, have been ejected from games for goading rival fans, spend a lot of time trying to get TV coverage whilst annoying their own supporters. Now they are trying to get their own uniform ie hooded tops. If some supporters fans can't see where this is going others can. It's gone beyond creating a better atmosphere.

Why can't we just be Saints supporters who all get behind the team as one and don't have little pockets of individual groups of uber fans who think there more special than everyone else?

pretty much everything Wigan fans (and probably most other teams fans) do is copied from football, from flags to songs...

Put Rouges right on something, the final at Wembley was a Leeds fan itching for a fight and spent most of the game in the Wire end goading fans in to trying to fight him, and eventually when no one would he picked a fight anyway.

I'm all for this, with two key reservations:

1) The word "ultra" is just so cringeworthy from a RL perspective. As Geoggy pointed out "The Scaff" would be much better, if indeed there NEEDS to be some sort of collective noun here. What is wrong with everybody just being called Saints supporters, but with with some organised signing? You don't need pin badges and a logo to get together and make some noise.

2) If the result of all this is the sort of mindless noise the Wigan fans are coming out with, I'll be throwing my own smokebomb - but it will be at the "ultras". Support should be relevant to the team and town, not the self indulgent "look at us" nonsense from over the lump.

Organised Saints songs - awesome, can't wait. Irrelevant, derivative, unoriginal noise pollution under some "uber fan" identity - no thanks.
