When Graeme Horne scored his 1st try last week (the one right on half-time where Latus made a mess of the bomb) my immediate reaction was no try, but nobody else seemed to have a problem with it.

Now I've watched it again I'm still not sure it should have been given.

It's on here about 17:15...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... pisode_23/

Basically a player can juggle the football in a forwards direction as long as it doesn't hit the ground / another player / post / official before he retrieves it...this probably happens 2/3 times a game.

What I didn't think you were allowed to do was propel the ball forwards deliberately with the intention of gaining an advantage, ie lob the ball over a defenders head & run on to it.

Imo this is basically how Horne scored the try. The tip-on appeared a deliberate attempt to knock the ball over Louis Sheriffs head.

So which of these is correct?...

a) I've misunderstood the rules & this is ok
b) This was the case but the rule / interpretation has changed at some point
c) This is the case & the officials missed it

Any ideas?

I believe it's classed as ungentlemanly conduct.

Begs the question, could sheriff have taken him out while the ball was in the air fairly?

I thought that at a the time it should have been a knock on.

The answer is a).

He isn't in possession of the ball when he plays at it and therefore his action counts as an attempt to gather a loose ball. The Rovers player and Horne are effectively contesting for the ball, so the fact that the ball travels forward is irrelevant.

If he had been carrying the ball and had thrown it over his opponent's head to regather it and score then he would have been guilty of deliberately propelling the ball forward to gain advantage. Or if he had headed the ball rather than play at it with his hand then he might have been pinged.

Nothing wrong with it. Ball didn't touch the ground or anything.

Good question. I questioned this at the time. As a Giants fan, I thought it was a deliberate knock on and should have been pulled back. He deliberatley tipped it forward.

Are we really questioning this? It's only a knock on if it hits someone else or the ground, or the posts maybe. But it would only be like Horne juggling the ball before he catches it. Can't see what anyone can think is wrong with it.

No it's not. A deliberate knock on is quite different. If a player deliberatley threw the ball over the oncoming defence, caught it before it hit the floor or someone else, and scored, you'd be happy? Juggling with the ball is when a player is trying to regather, Horne didnt try to regather, he tipped it, deliberately, over your players head.
