Your comparing a player from a GF winning side to one performing in a lower ranked side.

Leeds by virtue of being a top side they would have been on the front foot more - thus less tackling and more offensive plays.

In our first SL two seasons in particular we were certainly up against it , and often only long periods in defence brought us results.
Its funny you should mention that.
Ian Kirkes worst 2 years for average meters where 2008+2010
His best 2 years where 2011+2009
Jason Nerthertons worst 2 years where 2010+2011.
His best 2 years being 2008+2007.
So in actual fact he made more meters per carry in exactly the years we were up against it as you put it.
Ian Kirke made 24 offloads last year, Jason Netherton made 5, Infact in no point has JN surpassed or even matched IK on this stat, but his best 2 years were infact 2008 and 2010.
Infact if we remove 2007+2008 for the averages the gap between the 2 gets even bigger.

Interesting indeed.

Though I suppose the coaches game plans and team selection will not be too much based on these stats , having a player who can put a fair old stint in defence will be of some merit with regard team selection.

IMO , JN is definitely no world beater but puts a decent shift in defence in particular , and has been worth his inclusion in the squad.

Netherton seems to be coming in for some serious scapegoating. Isn't the real issue that he's fine as a decent/honest squad player:

..but he's getting picked ahead of other players that fans generally believe can contribute more at this level, ie it's a coach's selection issue rather than an ability issue?

I wouldn't argue with any of this.

Squad, Yes.
A constant first team regular, No.

I agree.
It's a squad game , but it's how you select the team for a particular game is the point.

The old adage that defence wins games is true , but you do also have to look at your offensive options to capitalise on good defensive work.

Our cause has not been helped either by the number of errors made and giving away field position , increasing the amount of tackling we've had to do at the wrong end of the field.

i've said on a fair few threads that as a squad player (back up, not first 17) fed trained and cheapish on the cap that i'd agree with him being involved but imo there is far more better players than jn in the squad that should be selected before him.

Take off those dislike specs and read what you have actually posted. Your stats are very VERY similar (something you asked for as you will never get a player that is accurately the same) and the only stat that puts Kirke ahead of Jase is the offloads of which our WHOLE sqaud rarely does.

In his first game Mason offloaded more in that one game than Jase has over three seasons yet in the 5 games that followed that he offloaded ONCE. Does this not show that the coaching is the problem and if Jase was encouraged to offload he would probably be up there with similar stats to Kirke.

We play safe rugby, Leeds play an offload risk game. Put Jase in that squad under those coaches and he'd be on a par with Kirke easily. Remember it is not that he can't offload because in the CC Quarter Final against Warrington he released an almost impossible offload that got us a try.

I have also never said that Netherton or Kirke are players that will take us to the next level but what I am saying is he is the sort of cheap dependable player who puts everything in which is what his coach asks of him. All players have jobs on the pitch, he does the one he is asked to do and does it very well.

If he does leave I fear for the player that you take a dislike to...

We're coming to make some noise!

Yes very similar apart from offloads..................and meters made per tackle obviously (I say 1/2 a meter more everytime is a pretty big diffrence but you don't think so obviously.).

It's fifty centimetres, Kirke is fifty centimetres taller than Netherton so it's just that he falls further when tackled.

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

Frederick Douglas
