J20 wrote:What worries me slightly about this potential deal is if this lad was that promising… why is he leaving KR to drop a league? Why has he only played twice? Why did HKR sign Hodgson from FC who is just a few months older? I realize he’s only young but still some considerations when compare where we are at currently and on limited cap.

FWIW, I really like the make up of the Robbins squad but one issue I have always seen there is at Hooker (6 since Cookes problems but you have now signed Green) I mean Fisher is a good player but not great, Murrell played there for a bit then moved so why wouldn’t this lad play a bit more? I understand challenging the playoffs’ may have affected this of course.

As for Smithy he’s the heart and sole of Widnes in the last 5 years and he apparently didn’t see eye to eye with Webster at first for whatever reason but tbf Webster didn’t do a lot here… Like Gene at Halifax (sometimes these things happen) but Smith could still cut it in SL easy IMO, he’s a solid player gives 110% and is great in defence, to say a two game academy lad is better than him sounds a bit daft, though potential wise obviously the possibility.

We already have Coyle & Netherton signed though also so not sure how would fit in having 3 plus Thacks & I’Anson when what we really need is a kicking game from 7!

as I said earlier spav is steady but unspectacular, arguably a bit above reserve grade though now. he's in the same position as I'anson really both are real triers who will do a good job in the championship very much like thackeray but are not quite up to superleague imho, if you're looking to win the grand final next year they are good signings, if you're looking to build a team to be competitive in superleague the year after I suspect they will fall by the wayside with netherton and thackeray after your first year in the top flight.

spav will turn out to be a decent player given time, his attitude is top notch, a dedicated trainer as ive ever seen..what he needs is game time....unfortunatly rover signed hodgson from fc for what reason i do not know as he does nothing to warrent a place above spaven from what ive seen of him both at fc and kr, they already had fisher etc, so his time on the field has been limited to 2 games vs bradford in which was solid both with the ball and in defence.
in morgans words he couldnt fault the guy and he will be missed by EVERYONE at the club.....
if the salary cap would allow him to be there, im certain he would be in the roster for next year, but unfortunatly 3 hookers doesnt fit into 2 places...and money talks...
maybe it will be for the best that he moves on and ventures to pastures new, that will have to be seen, but what i can tell you is that you havent heard the last of this kid in one capacity or another...

  totally agree , great lad Scott , attitude is 2nd to non ,was a good 6 or 7 in his amateur days ,obviously superleague is a different story but he will be a good asset to any team .

don't doubt his attitude or the fact he has the heart of a lion, he lacks pace and size for the superleague in my opinion and I have seen a lot of him in the reserves. hodgson does have pace though and whilst not the finished article has more potential. the same could have been said of I'anson and kirk netherton as well, great attitudes tremendous lads with great work ethics, but if you aspire to be a competitive superleague team rather than just making up the numbers these sort of lads are not going to be the mainstay of your team, I wish them all well though and genuinely believe they will be a success in the championship

i beg to differ on that...given the amount of first grade games he's played he aint pulling up no trees, otherhand if spaven had had as many games im sure the boot would be on the other foot and it would be hodgson on his bike...

you may be right about hodgson time will tell, he has shown enough glimpses in the red and white so far though to suggest there is more to come particularly in his early season games perhaps he went off the boil a litttle later as the physical demands maybe hit him,

but as far as spav goes, having seen the vast majority of home reserve games over the last 2 years and one or 2 away games I still can't see him making it as a superleague player he's good at the level he is at but hasn't done enough for me to warrant being promoted, at the slower level of the championship though I'm convinced he'll be good

Spav played pretty well in his two first team appearances last season and didn't look out of place at all. He looks like he's going to go the way many players do without being given a genuine chance to progress. The standard of reserve grade footie has been so poor in recent years it has become more of a hinderence to a players development than anything. Spav needed to play NL1 last season NOT reserve grade and would have benefitted immensely from being dual registered imho and long term Rovers may have benfitted from it also.

Motto of the week -

It is the way of the weak to secretly bleat to those in authority rather than fight their own battles.

There were a few players in this year's 20s who would have benefited from either NL1 or a dual but understand JM is not a fan of either, especially duals, as a number of players asked for them and were turned down. The 20s competition was all over the place, just look at what Wigan were putting out in their 20s in order to win the competition. There needs to be a better feeder process either with the NL teams or the NC clubs in Hull that would allow players to be developed by SL sides. Far too many kids are discarded at 20 and are lost to the game after being disallusioned. It would be far better as an U23s comp with say 4 over age players allowed and if you are not picked that weekend, carry on playing for your feeder side.
