Post subject: Club Championship and the first steps to a second NZ team

DOES THIS carry any weight or meaning? I had never heard of it until today..
Also, the Wellington Orcas kicked off the 7 zone tournament in Lower Hutt near Wellington yesterday with a win. Terrible weather (they weren't messing about when they called this place windy wellington), but still a fairly good turn out and a great game. The other teams are the Northern Swords, Auckland, Counties-Manukau, Waicoa Bay Stallions (Waikato, Coastline and Bay of Plenty), Heartlands (Hawke's Bay, Manawatu and Taranaki) and a lone South Island team, the aptly named South Island. There are 3 grades, with the premier comp followed by u17's and u15's....a fair bit of coverage in print in the Dominion Post today, but not a lot of on-line coverage.....let's hope this comp has got some life in it after the demise of the Lion Red and Bartercard cups.

Sadly the lack of vision and strategy by the NRL means that there is no bid from Wellington and little sign that there will be one. They had the chance to work with the last bid team but basically took them to take a hike. A Southern Orcas with 9 games in Wellington and 3 in Christchurch would be the way to go. The NZRL need to get their act togther first, then the NRL needs to give the $'s and players it takes out of NZ back, then a bid team needs to get its act together, then we will see RL become the main sport in NZ imo.
WEST COAST PIRATES NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......
