Well it is, in the fact that even if he had rejected their contract offer all they had to do was make sure they put it in writing - and they'd have been entitled to a fee for him when he signs for someone else.
Because they didn't do that they won't get a penny in compensation, so an admin error could potentially end up with losing them a couple of million quid.

Not that fussed seeing him go, if he does of course. If he wants to go and play for Sunderland or Newcastle let him. We'll miss out on a few quid compo but he won't be missed.
