Couple of interesting stats from Opta. Rooney has lost possession more times than any other player in the tournament so far and Frank Lampard's free-kick onto the bar was his 37th world cup shot without scoring, more than any other player (1966-2010).

PAUL M wrote:Awful display, the goal that was not given could have changed the match but still we were out played from beginning to end. The players have let the fans down and looked a shadow of their usual selves. That said Capello made some awful decisions for such an astute coach, SWP, Carragher and Barry. Barry should never play for England again, he just gives the ball away and for a holding midfielder he never seems to make a tackle.

Whilst there is a question mark over Barry he did complete more passes than any other England player in the game and had a higher completion rate than Gerrard and Lampard. Workable stats here.

He scored with his 36th.

His free kick was his 37th shot without a goal being given.

They haven't had much competition for that title though, have they?

IMO no. He's got a top quality CV, one of the best in the world. England were excellent in qualification.

I think he started making mistakes in the build up to the World Cup and has had a very poor tournament. But seeing as he has the vast experience and talent he has I think it would be stupid to turf him out after this. He'll have learnt a lot about about England, the English press and tournament football this summer. His English will improve when he has a few more years behind him.

I also think there isn't any overwhelming candidates to take over from him. Harry Redknapp??? Give me a break. He has so much baggage the knives will be stabbing him in the back as soon as he has the press conference giving him the job. Getting 4th place with Spurs is a success, but it's a success based totally on the implosion of LFC. He is also a twitching tvvat.

Hodgson. Yeah, let's appoint someone on the back of 5 minutes of success in a mediocre career. That'll work, won't it?

Hiddink would be a possible, and obviously as a CFC fan I like him a lot, but his Russia side didn't even make the WC.

For me, stick with Capello and have a massive cull of our ridiculous press and the idiots who feed the press. Burn down Fleet Street and shoot to kill with all rioters tonight.

TBF I don't disagree with that

I think Capello's had a poor world cup, but England will never progress if we continue to believe that simply changing the manager is the solution to our problems.

We have a fundamental shortage of genuine talent. You only have to look at the quality of the back up players and the ones that just failed to make the squad to see how we lack depth. We will never win a world or european cup until we can produce more skilful players.

Agreed, exactly what I've been saying for the last few weeks.

Spot on fella. The technical ability of our players is quite frankly a disgrace.

Germany didn't even need to play well to stuff England. If it wasn't for James they'd have scored 5 or 6.

Absolute dog $hit defending.

"Golden generation" my ar$e.

Gareth Barry, Ashley Cole and David James are the only players who can hold their head half high after their performances yesterday.

Captain fantastic playing for Stevie FC was woeful.
