An interesting article in one of Spain's bigger newspapers today suggesting that already disappointing crowds could beceome embarrassing if Bafana Bafana go out in the group stages.

For me Mexico 86 was my first and a cracker. Italia 90 was a good tournament. I went to bed at 9pm to wake up at around midnight for the USA 94 games. Don't remember too much about the 1998 world cup. Was working in Italy for the 2002 tournament which was pure comedy as that bent ref 'knocked' the Italians and then the Spanish out. Very few memories about the last world cup.

What a stupid statement.
Sure, the matches haven't been that good, however, most teams think it more important to not lose the first game rather than trying to force the win.
Now that we're in the second round of matches I think the quality of the games will improve. It's also good for the tournament that "lesser" nations are getting results against the powerhouses.

They are not out yet......just nearly as good as. If Mexico and France draw, Uraguay beat Mexico (or draw) and South Africa beat France....they are through. Stranger things have happened. But it is long shot....

Thank God I'm an atheist.

I can remember the Argentina team from 86, and quite a bit about Italia '90 then all the competitions since.
I can honestly say I don't remember too many group games, specific goals and moments yes, but no great games at an early stage.
I'm not saying this World Cup has been good, but I do think there are so many 24/7 media sources nowadays that it's easy for opinions and a general consensus to snowball, I've read a few articles saying "worst world cup ever" and we've not even had a week of games yet.
I definitely don't like the fan culture in South Africa and I think that is having an adverse effect on the overall experience, I'm not excusing any mistakes but I think the ball is terrible and the amount of overhit passes and crosses is ridiculous and surely the two are related.
Generally I think not losing has come more and more into the mindset of footballers and coaches as the game becomes more and more dominated by money and that is being reflected in some very cautious play, it shouldn't be that much of an issue at the World Cup but it's hard to adjust your mindset from one competition to another.
Oh, and after seeing everyone at least once I'd say the best teams so far have been Germany, Argentina, South Korea and Chile, they all played some good attacking stuff and were very watchable.
I think the Koreans could cause Argentina some problems tomorrow with their pace and movement against a fragile defence.

Ah but are you confident enough to get on? 7/1 for a Korean win and 16/5 the draw with paddy power
I'm with you though they will cause them some problems, was very impressed with them against Greece very quick on and off the ball. Be a test for the Argentina back line, more so than Nigeria posed. Looking forward to it.
