I would have thought a home grown winger / centre / full back with some pace is what's required. When we were looking at losing Colbon and Fox, who was available to play as outright wingers? The current 20s wingers are Jack Snowden and Nathan Powley, with none of the other current first team sqaud classed as wingers.
I'll take Super League quality players coming through in any position - recruitment and retention can be shaped to fill the gaps.
We need 8 home grown
players in our top 25 earners next year. And Hodgson only qualifies temporarily. Assuming we didn't get a dispensation for the Cooke/Clinton overlap and that Mills leaves at the end of his contract, we'll be okay, but until we have more homegrown players commanding regular spots in the 17 and earning a wage that reflects that, we'll be restricted on recruitment.
Or we might let some big earners go to cut the wage bill, killing two birds with one stone. It'd leave us with a less competitive squad in the short-term, of course. The SmokeyTA plan of building for the future by being rubbish for a year or two was cack (see how the Harlequins RL club are flourishing). However, maybe now Rovers (and their youth system) are more established, a heavily diluted version of it might be the way forward. Do we have the patience?
