Supposedly announcing it on April 1st means it's either a windup or someone is having a bit of laugh by announcing dead serious news on April Fool's Day to get everyone guessing. Either way somebody, somewhere is having a chuckle.

but joking about like that just isn't the clubs style, and I doubt they'd kick up such a fuss the day before the derby for a laugh
