Would be my best XI.

I'd go;

Hart

Johnson
Terry
Rio
Cole

Barry
Lampard

Lennon - Milner

Gerrard (Crouch)

Rooney

There's quite abit of football left and form/injuries can change that. I bet Rooney gets injured and we have daily updates in the paper, with a picture of his foot that we all have to rub to madjikally make it better in time.

Carrick did very little again last night. The commentators tried to put the change in England's fortunes down to Carrick's introduction. I nearly fell off my chair. They also never criticised Carrick when he gave the ball away two or three times and his passes were poor. I have never known a midfielder so scared and heartless as Carrick. He is happy to give the ball to the centre-halves and other midfielders rather than try and take control himself.

It always comes down to City and Utd with you, it's pathetic.

Barry has done well for England and deserves his place at present but Carrick did make a difference last night. He pulls the strings of the side like he does for Utd. Admittedly he was poor at the beginning of the season but when he plays Utd are at their best and is a must for the WC squad imo.

I would rather see Warnock or Shorey selected ahead of him.

Bit harsh possibly? That would be Baines' first time playing under Capello? His first time with those centre backs? His first time in that formation and system? His crossing is fine and, if allowed by the tactics employed, is the best attacking left back in the country behind Cole and Evra. He's the form left back in the country, his performances against United, Chelsea and City recently were stellar.

You suggest he's not international class then opt for Warnock or Shorey? Cole is obviously the best left back, but Baines is surely next in line.

Shorey looked a lot more assured and confident when he played for England.

As for Shorey's crossing, you have to admit that it was poor last night

The only difference Carrick made was that he sat back on a few occasions so Barry pressed forward.

Crouch and SWP had a far more positive effect on the performance and the scoreline.

I am always suspicious by United fans when they cry about others being anti-United. I always feel it's because they need their ego massaging. It's as if you want me to gush about United.

You have to accept that not everyone loves the team you attached yourself to. It's something you are going to have to get used to. Every fan is biased but I have no qualms about lavishing praise on here for any players regardless of teh team they score. That includes the praise I have given to Ferdinand and Rooney. Because I don't rate scouse Mikey, Carrick and Anderson, doesn't mean I am biased. You need to stop playing the victim

Conversely, some people are unhappy because players from the team they support, were poor last night.

I don't want or expect people to praise Utd players whatsoever but lets face it the majority of your posts are always anti Utd or Spurs. Anyway I don't want to get into a penis measuring competition about it. Carrick has been at the heart of the side that has won the PL for the last three years and he is a very good player to have as backup to Gerrard, Lampard, Barry who seem to have their spots firmly cemented under Capello.

Insomnia and the internet is a wonderful thing sometimes, I managed to watch the France/Spain and Germany/Argentina games in full after England/Egypt.

There's nothing much more to say about Spain, they were on a different level to France and they weren't even at their most fluid best - the depth of their squad is frightening too, they took off Fabregas and Villa at half time and only had Xavi and Torres to replace them. Definitely the favourites, but everyone can have an off day and that's all it takes in the KO stage and you are gone, the defence still has question marks over it, but the problem is getting enough of the ball to test them.

France are way off the pace for me, Domenech couldn't seem do anything with them when they still had a smattering of world class players, now they have all but gone (or got old) there seems little chance of even a couple of players dragging them through to a decent finish like Zidane and Henry did in 2006.

The biggest surprise about Germany/Argentina is that, under Maradona, Argentina actually looked like a competent team for a change. Having seen a few of their qualifiers they played like a bunch of individuals with no idea what they were supposed to be doing as a whole, if last night wasn't a one off and they continue to build into a better unit for the tournament then they have every chance of doing well.

On the other hand Germany were disappointing, they didn't look like a team at all. I'm not sure if they were experimenting but there were a few players I wasn't familiar with and they didn't impress. Then again we all know that they are always a different proposition when it comes to the actual tournament.

Trying to be as unbiased as possible, I would say Carrick always looks a yard off the pace in mind and body against the big teams. When he has plenty of time to pick a pass there's not many better but when a snap decision/play needs making, he seems to get the ball taken off him or plays a stray pass. Premiership class but not international class for mine. If Hargreaves were fit, I wouldn't be taking Carrick to the World Cup.
