Are we more concerned about the lads confidence or trying to produce a performance. If he really looked the part and this was a lapse I would agree with you but he simply does not look a player. Taking him out of the firing line would be doing him a favour. He is not the reason we are losing matches but neither does he look as though he will win one for us. There are better options. He is not to be a scapegoat but he does not deserve to hold his place. Simples.

If you watch the highlights again you'll see that Matty Smith DID try to cover him on the last tackle - he just didn't do a very good job of it?!
