TBH if he was getting back in position then he probably wouldn't have been able to do a thing anyway. To stop the goal he'd have needed to pretty much stand over the ball so the attacker couldn't play the ball to a team mate. He'd have been booked for that, but obviously that would have been better than giving away the goal.
It is an issue that needs to be sorted out IMO. If given a choice attackers would always choose for the referee to allow them to take a quick free kick, but if they do that then the opposition will just have to plant someone on the ball to stop someone from doing that. Then we'll end up with bookings galore, arguments because attackers are getting angry over being stopped from taking quick free kicks, arguments because some attackers are deliberately playing the ball with a defender there just to get him booked and all matter of shamozzles.
