That's not what I said. For a start, there's no indication that he intends to completely sever his relationship with the club or even leave the board. However, if he steps aside from an active role and allows someone else to be the public face when/if tough decisions are made then he has distanced himself somewhat from those decisions.
And I did say it was a cynical POV.

Some good points.
I'd argue that the urgency was getting into SL and not being relegated rather than performing well, but I guess calibrating the precise amount of cash to spend to achieve that without going overboard would have been problematic. NH himself has admitted that you've paid over the odds in order to attract a certain calibre of player to the club, but hindsight is always 20/20.
As far as his reasons for leaving are concerned, I did say it was my cynical side coming up with the 'hiding' scenario. There's actually some evidence of his disillusionment with SL in certain of his public pronouncements so it may simply be as suggested in the article.
