Indeed but there were quite a few doubts about whether or not he would be able to make it in the NFL as an every down back and would simply be a situational guy, something which, to this point has pretty much turned out to be true.

Clausen isn't going to turn this franchise around which leads me to believe that we'll be picking top 10 again next season. I would prefer to pick up a player described as potentially the most dominant player to come out of college in the last 10 years and then pick up our QB of the future next season where there's arguably better options to choose from.

Clausen is better than Stafford. Clausen had one of the best if not the best seasons of a junior QB to enter the draft (obviously that doesn't neccesarily translate to being an NFL standard QB). You need a QB. It's pretty simple.

As for players being called the best, the only one i can think of is Reggie Bush.

I would say Vince young was just as highly rated as Bush leading up to the draft after all he'd just won the MVP in the rose bowl against Bush's USC team.

I'm hoping Vince Young carries on improving next year and carrying on doing so.

VY has improved this year but i dont think he will ever be that real elite passer.

His draft stock went down radically after the Saints signed Breesus Christ and it came out that he was about as intelligent as a new born baby when he got 6 out of 50 on his Wonderlic test. Even in his re-test he only got 16.

After that it was doubtful he'd go in the top 5 or 10 and wasn't rated much ahead of Leinart and Cutler.

The pointless wonderlic test, nearly as pointless as testing how fast a 300+ lineman runs 40 yards. Some of the things they do leading up to a draft are unbelievable. How about looking at game film and talking to the player to find out what kind of a person they are. They to me are more important in drafting a player than finding out how good he is at doing the wonderlic.

Mayock had Cutler as his best passer I think. Either that or down as the most NFL ready..cant remember.

The wonderlic is far from pointless. In fact all of the test are relevent in some way. Obviously only Al Davies takes them in isolations and drafts the fastest/strongest/biggest player irrelevant of how good they are or whether they are worth taking in that position.

I'd say the Wonderlic is relevent though. You want a QB (in particular) who is inteligent enough to make a decision/read defences/ audible calls/ handle the media. All of which are linked to inteligence and the Wonderlic test.

The thing is, the things you mention are either intangibles or 'football intelligence'. I reckon there's probably several players out there that are very intelligent in football terms but not the sharpest tool in the drawer when it comes to non-football related matters. They've been brought up on this stuff almost their whole life. Football is their education, not the content of the Wonderlic test.

Obviously there will be correlation between poor test scores and poor players in some instances but I wouldn't completely rule out a player based on them scoring higher than another.

I think too much emphasis is placed on the Combine anyway. It gives little indication as to how a player will perform in pads in a game situation and should act merely as an aid for a team's drafting strategy rather than defining it (which seems to be the case for some teams these days).
