Competitive as in will definately win an acceptable number of games or competitive in the sense that we'll expect, rather than just hope to win SL? If the former, I'd say definately.
The team really grew in 2009 and looks stronger now than it did at
the start of that season. Only one of the players that has left had a first 13 squad number. Much loved as the were, Aizue only made the team once in the last 11 rounds, while Gene was limited to couple of starts and handful of the games from the bench. They'll excel in the in NL, but were not crucial to our success
in 2009. Ratu in the centres, Walker hopefully returning to compete for a place in the back row in place of now-a-prop Rhys Lovegrove, plus the arrival of Cook, is very progressive IMO. We'll need more from Cockayne and something from Hodgson to compensate for the loss of Fitzhenry, but I don't think that is unrealistic.
Where we do look weaker than 12 months ago is at prop. Lovegrove was a nice surprise and Wheeldon what we hoped for. There is no disguising the loss of Fozzard, and Mills's season stalling pretty much completely. As long as Vella stays fit, it'll be okay, but we'd all like to see a bit more support for him.
Briscoe, Fox, Welham (did I mention he made the RLW team of the season?
), Dobson, Murrell, Newton and Vella are all contracted beyond 2010 and look a pretty decent foundation to me. A few good youngsters coming in alongside them, over the next couple of years, would provide even more cause for optimism.
