...by the acclaimed Sid Domic no less. He is designing the playing shirt for an Aboriginal team to take on the NRL All-Stars, which will open the 2010 NRL season.

Now, I can imagine how hideous the shirt could be as a wearable garment; but it could be alright as a framer.

Far from it. Newcastle Knights had an aboriginal style shirt for 1 round this year. It was a cracker!

Mate, that is no rugby jersey. Imagine Salford's home shirt littered with graffiti.

Aboriginal art work is hardly graffiti.

I personally like it a lot. I like the unconventional nature of the design. The message behind it is quite wonderful as well.

As for asthetics, well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Maybe this is another difference between the brits and their antipodean cousins. It seems to me that a major character trait of the British is to be quite closed to anything a bit out-there, a bit different and not the norm. The Aussies tend to avoid getting upset over most things and I'm sure thats what the good folk of Newcastle were like when this jersey got released. Kinda "yeah, cool, whatever."

I reckon we should get Peter Saville to design a special shirt if or when the new stadium opens, he is steaped in Mancunian history and I reckon it would generate interest outside of the RL community.

I didn't mean that in a derogatory way. I like Aboriginal art, that's why I posted the item in the first place! I was drawing a comparison between indiginous art forms, and making a cheap gag that art indiginous to Salford is graffiti. Swap graffiti then with a Lowry print – would we all be happy with Salford playing in a Lowry print shirt next year?

I disagree. Some Aussie clubs sell supporters shirts — which sport a club's traditional colours and colour forms — as well as replica jerseys, which must tell you something. Why, also, did the Australian national jersey revert back to traditional type after a few stray design years in the 90s?

Your club's jersey shouldn't be a fashion statement, it represents the team and its supporters. Sports most successful clubs and franchises recognise this. Check what most of the top Premier League football clubs and the England national team have done recently.

Indeed, Aussie clubs often play in many playing shirts throughout a season. Yeh, sure, they have their traditional jerseys as the main playing jersey but in addition they will have an Anzac jersey which reverts to a design from the clubs beginning. e.e, we'd play in white with a red stripe or whatever design we had in 1897. In addition to this they have the option of playing in other jerseys depending on the theme at the time. e.g, respect of indigenous culture or "women in league" campaign in which Penrith Panthers went as far as wearing a pink jersey as a 1 off. All of these jersey and many others went on sale at the stadiums as well as the standard colours of the clubs.
Furthermore, the kangaroos played in maroon and blue at the SCG last year to comemorate 100 years of RL down under.

In an ideal world I'd like to think that we had our red jersey first and foremost but to be open to one off jerseys that are of significant value at the time.
