It's also not simply a case of a like for like wage split.
For example let's imagine using completely made up figures:
We were at the cap and hock was getting 100k, and our total 25 top earners came to 1.6 million, and we had 3 lads who were outside the top 25 earners but we'd played them in a qualifying game and their total salary came to 45k (one at 15k and 2 at 10k)
Lets imagine we upgrade the salary of the lad on 15k, and lets call him Tom and the other two lads who are on 10k Dick and Harry.
Gareth Hock leaves - this frees up 100k on first tier liability and makes the lad currently on 15k our 25th top earner. We increase his salary to 35k - we still have 65k available on the first tier cap.
We could not sign a new player on 50k even though we have 65k of first tier cap available.
Why? well this would push Tom to be the 26th Highest earner meaning his 35K needs to fit into the 2nd tier cap of 50K and Dick and Harry's current wages mean there's only space for 30K.
The whole cap is a really big juggling act, and it's not always quite so simple as to say player X left there we have Amount Y available.
Hope that makes sense.
