much as I'd love to help the club out I think my family would say my DIY skills are testimony to the fact that I would be more of a liability. Knowing the way health and safety has gone a bit mad here I think this idea would never see the light of day. Great work over in Germany though.

Just to point out - health and safety has not gone mad - insurance companies and hysterical, clueless media outlets have. There is no health and safety law against this, but as Sheddy pointed out, the matter is whether the principal contractor would be comfortable having volunteers do the work.

Nevertheless, there must be some rules about putting bricks, pick-axes, etc. in the hands of Salford kids.

Never mind the credit crunch, if Pev was allowed to volunteer to build the stadium there'd be a builders bum so large that it would block out the sun and cause a new ice age!!

I cannot see any responsible contractor even thinking about that. With it being a new build then more than likley they would sign upto a considerate contractors scheme which i think that one of the requirements state that all employees should have the basic knowledge of Health & safety and to either have a CSCS card or to be working to.

Yes, but that's a choice and not a law, and secondly, there's nothing stopping "volunteers" being trained up to be competent.

Obviously we're talking hypothetically here anyway - none of us are really likely to spend our spare time building a stadium, but as someone who works in health and safety I get fed up of people giving it a bad name by hiding behind "health and safety" as an excuse for not doing something.

Would we get away with having the whole stadium built as one massive practical project for the Salford City College HNC in Construction?

Totally correct Iain

and as most H&S is based on European laws (e.g the six pack) - surely it'll roughly the same for both (allowing for Common Law - which we have and they don't!).

Nothing hypothetical in my statement Iain. If it could be arranged I would happily donate some time to the project next Summer during my break from education.
