My son is just coming up to his 6th birthday and he is really keen to join a local club and play alongside kids of a similar age.

I know local football teams offer a skills training provision at that age, but I am not sure about the local RL scene.

Get him down to Crosfields mate on a Saturday morning. Very much an emphasis on fun for the kids and playing with a smile on their face as they learn the skillset gradually.

I concur, Crosfields currently have an under 7s team with some kids around about 5 years old and all are having a great time.

Interesting topic this for us parents.

Do the young ones ie, under 7's have to have any prior knowledge experience of the game or will they be taught the basics from scratch?

Also do they need any physical attributes ie, overly big, quick etc?

I'd love to see my little man running round in a mini kit with skull cap etc.

No experience at all, they are taught the core skills of the game without realising what they are doing usually through FUN games.

They've got some really small ones playing at the mo, plus there are strengths in the game for all kids at that age according to their size. Doesn't matter if you think your kid is too small (he's probably nippy) or too big and slow (he's probably hard to tackle). Great all round for them. They wince when they get their first ever tackle but they soon get over it.

As Geordie says, fun is the operative word at that age, or should be. My boy is in the Under 9's now and they're starting to get strict with them and their drilling, but for the first two years it was all about just enjoying themselves.
