Oh yeah don't get me wrong it does work for a lot of people (Savage's series of bouts against DDP in WCW was also meticulously rehearsed and they were top notch), but many guys (inc Ted Dibiase - one of the all-time greats) said he prefered working on the fly and felt sometimes you could have better matches by doing so.
The problem with scripted matches/promos is if someone forgets something, it can screw things up completely if you don't have the ability to think quick.
O/T Funny clip on that popular video site of Angle trying to force open a cage door to attack someone, but as hard as he tries it just won't open, I think he ended up having to climb over.
