Mate you gotta search some old WCW footage from about '98, he really is good on the mic, if he seems annoying/irritating when talking these days I would say it's more down to the role WWE wants him to play.

In WCW and WWF/E he really has done some quality stuff (also search his p*$$taking of Stephanie during the Invasion days ). Always makes the best of a bad situation, performer of the year IMO.
