goes to Sir Tony Smith for managing to offload Martin Gleeson in exchange for £100k AND Richie Mathers
Some people questioned it at the time but in hindsight it was an absolute masterstroke by Sir Tony Smith. Wigan most definitely got taken to the cleaners on that one, in fact in some ways its more satisfying than giving them what for in the semi final

I have to agree about Mathers. When we signed him I was pretty ambivalent. He hadn't been great at Wigan but then he was really unhappy there. Plus I was really anti-Readon so anyone was better than him.
My main feeling about the whole transfer situation was 'hooray we're getting rid of Gleeson!'
Now I have to say I am chuffed we signed Mathers, he's really been a decent player for us and seems really happy at the club. Did anyone notice his reaction when Hoyle said about Wire outsinging the "Wigan old-faithful" at the homecoming yesterday?
I think its clear that Mathers hates all things Wigan.
Probably stems from having a Sh*t house coach who dumps on his players (See Mickey Higham) and also terrible fans who gave him an awful amount of stick and abuse.
Mathers has brought another dimension to our team/club and I for one is glad that he is here.
ps, Getting rid of that waster Gleeson is the best thing that has ever happened to this club in the SL era (although getting Smith in may be better). The things i heard about Gleeson beggers belief.
