Sheffield finished 8th in SL 3 (1998)
Their record was:
Played 23, Won 8, Drawn 2, Lost 13, Pts For 495, Pts Agst 541, Comp Pts 18
Huddersfield 34, Warrington 24

So as things stand Wire could be the 'worst' team to win the CC for sometime, given that there were 10 years of Wigan before sheffield

Warrington would probably be the 'worst' team to win the cup since Leeds won it in 1976/77.
Hands off our record Wire, Fartown all the way.

It was an upset alright and Hull went on to take out the first division title that year.
I don't have easy access to the old scrapbooks at the moment though and that'd be my only resource for the finishing table that year. Oh hang on just thought of another...... back in a couple of minutes.
Edit: Featherstone won that Challenge Cup while ending the season
12th in a 16 team first division, missing out on relegation by one place and one point.
Their record was:
Played 30, Won 10, Drew 4, Lost 16, Pts For 350, Pts Agst 447, Comp Pts 24

Just found
this which says Fev came 12th of 16, although it is on Wikipedia I take the table as being correct.

It's the potential winner.... for now.
Another thread derailed.
Huddersfield 34, Warrington 24
