If it comes down to the crunch and Salford is told that playing out of their current stadium they will not make the cut, would you want the club to play games at a stadium that is up to standard for the short to mid term if it means the club keeps its place in SL?
The obstacle until recently was Peel Holdings getting planning for Port Salford which included the new roads between the stadium site and the M60. They now have planning approval for this which took about 5 years due the complexity of the application.
On a really positive note the MD of Peel put out an article in yesterdays Manchester Evening News saying that they are fully committed to building the stadium. (This is the first occasion that Peel has made any kind of public comment about their committment to building the stadium) This suggests to me that they now know they're close and previously didn't want to commit and leave themselves open to criticism because they knew it would take a long time to deliver.
Let's hope things really gather momentum now and that the club won't be faced with this kind of ultimatum.
