I totally agree that we are THE ORIGINAL AND BEST RED DEVILS.
We are never going to get rid of UTD using it nor are we ever going to stop the parachute regiments display team using it.
However, does that mean WE should stop? NO WAY PEDRO!!!!

We still have some tenuous links to the devil, look at the top of this page. Now is the time to openly market it again and use it to it's fullest degree. I hardly think the juggernaught that is Utd is going to be that bothered by little old Salford using the name again.

As for Fatboys Limbs comment about Saints being unique to St Helens RL:

And just_browny after all these years I stand corrected. I have just looked up the Belgian football team and noticed they got the name in 1906!!! Fair play.

However, doesn't this just prove 2 things.
1. There is no problem sharing a nick name and marketing
2. Man Utd don't even rank a sad 2nd place in this and therefore have no outright claim.

This is something I've complained about since the Devil was removed and it's been indicated in my Sig ever since. I think the difference with our nickname is the fact it was given to us (and by a different country) and not made up by the club itself.

As an aside, here are the other nicknames the club had (I'm not including the ones often shouted on the terraces! ) before been given the one we have. (Thanks to Graham Morris' excellent 'A Willows Century') book.

1880's The Turkeys / Turkey Reds / Good Old Turkey - was a common reference due to the original Scarlet-red shade of the jersey worn.
1890's The Scarlet Runners / Red Jackets
1900's The Royalists / Royal Reds - became popular due to Salford's historical status of being a 'Royal and Ancient Borough' since the 14th century.
