They don't make them like they used to, in Live Wired's day they weren't allowed calculators and had to memorise log and sine tables before they went into the exam.

They proberley weren't even allowed to use spell checkers either.

On the issue of dumbing down, 1st class degrees are one of the remaining academic achievements which are still very hard to get, because you need to be consistent right through your degree. Most students who get straight As at A level end up with 2.1 degrees. A lot of bright students have the 2.1 mentality, they will do enough to make sure they get that because its the cut off for what most of the top employers will ask for, but they can't be bothered pushing themselves to get a 1st.

Generally if you have a group of 100 students on a university course, about 8-10 will get 1sts, about 50-55 will get 2.1s and about 30 will get 2.2s. The rest will be 3rds and a couple of fails.

Congratulations Jen, you've worked hard and deserved it! I'm sure you will not have too much of a problem finding a job.

Live Wired, if you actually looked at any degree level maths you will see how useless a calculator would be for the majority of the exams. Jenny has done very well to achieve a 1st class degree.
