Well, seeing as you ask...
IMHO, very few of the current crop (including Hewer) are competent to adequately control a game of elite level Rugby League. Perhaps they will be eventually, but at this moment in time they're not. Just look - as a neutral - at how games have gone this season and some of the utter garbage we've seen holding whistles. Hewer, Thaler, Halibert... I mean - Halibert ffs! "MOOOOOOOVE!" .... If you didn't laugh you'd cry!
This isn't the refs' fault, of course. I'm sure they try their very best and in the main you have to just let it slide. But the bottom line is they were promoted too soon thanks to a number of fairly recent events, chief among those being..
1) Ref's going "Pro"
2) The RFL offering peanuts for full time refereeing jobs
3) Karl K buggering off
4) Ashley buggering off
5) The (forced, as a result of the above) abandonment of the 'no-home ref' rule.
Yes - I can barely believe it myself but I'm actually lamenting the loss of Karl Kirkpatrick! But guess what? If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys! The RFL in general - and Stuart Cummings in particular - should IMHO hang their/his head(s) in shame after the standards we've seen in the first half of 2009. They (collectively) have tried to officiate the game on the cheap and the result has been an unmitigated failure.
Come back Russell. Christ only knows we need you..!!
