Sean Long is considering a move away from St Helens after being told he can speak to other clubs.
The 32-year-old former Great Britain scrum-half has been at Knowsley Road for 12 years, helping Saints win five Challenge Cups and four Super League titles.
A meeting with St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus is planned for the end of the month to talk about an extension of his contract, which runs out at the end of the season.
But with only a one-year deal expected to be on offer, Long admits he could begrudgingly be on his way.
Option
"Obviously I'd like to stop at St Helens to finish my career but, if another club comes in with a two-year deal, I've got to consider it," he said.
"He [McManus] has given me the option to speak to other clubs so I may as well see what's out there.
"It would absolutely kill me to leave. I've made some great friends here. I love the club; I love the style of rugby we play. The fans have always been fantastic with me.
"Hopefully I can get it sorted out and finish my career at St Helens."
Long, who previously played for Wigan and Widnes, is second in the club's all-time list of scorers with 2,586 points from 319 appearances.
He clearly doesn't want to leave Saints and one has to wonder whether he would be fully committed to the cause and whether it would be the best way to utilise our funds. ATEOTD he's going to be 33 this year, he's ticking on a bit. Not sure it would be for the best to offer him a two year deal IMO.
If London is Athens, Yorkshire is Sparta, a tougher community and proud of it.
