In practice the QB's wear red jerseys to inform other players not to hit them, in NCAA, when you 'redshirt' a player, it means delaying or suspending an athlete's participation in order to lengthen their period of eligibility

I was aware that QBs in red shirts were to be left alone but not the other bit. Thanks for explaining it to me.
